Ronaldo’s penalty completes Juventus 2-1 win

Category : Football

Rome, Jan 28: Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late penalty to give Juventus a 2-1 win at Lazio, extending the Bianconeri’s lead at the top of Serie A to 11 points.
The Portuguese superstar and his compatriot Joao Cancelo on Sunday scored in the final 15 minutes to complete the comeback and salvage a match that the Roman team had dominated for the first hour, reports Efe news.
Ronaldo scored the winner to conclude a difficult week for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner after he appeared at a court in Spain to plead guilty to tax fraud.
He has also been the subject of a police investigation amid allegations of rape in a hotel room in Las Vegas in 2009 which Ronaldo denies.
Juventus were second best throughout the opening period and into the second half, and went behind after midfielder Emre Can turned the ball into his own net from a Luis Alberto corner.
It was the least Lazio deserved, after they had dominated the ball and capitalized on Juventus’s passiveness in possession.
Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri sent on Federico Bernardeschi and Cancelo in a bid to rescue a result and the changes had the desired impact.
Cancelo levelled the score on 74 minutes when he pounced on a rebound from Paulo Dybala’s strike, before he won a penalty after a counter attack led by Bernardeschi.
Ronaldo stepped up to convert the spot kick in the 88th minute and extend his team’s lead at the top of the league, where they are a massive 11 points better off than Napoli in second, after they drew 0-0 against AC Milan.
Juventus, who have won the last seven Serie A titles, have drawn just twice so far this season, racking up 19 wins in the process and look odds-on to win their eighth consecutive league championship.
The Bianconeri face Spain’s Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, the first leg of which takes place on February 20.

ISL: Mumbai end Bengaluru’s unbeaten run to top the table

Category : Football , News

Mumbai, Jan 28: A Bengaluru FC’s undefeated season suffered its first blemish after a Paulo Machado goal (29′) was all Mumbai City FC needed to get past the Blues in an Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday evening.
The win also meant that Jorge Costa’s men, who have played a game more than Bengaluru but have the same number of points as the Blues (27) and similar goal difference (+9), go atop the table owing to goals scored.
With striker Miku and defender Nishu Kumar still on the road to recovery, Cuadrat rolled out a 4-3-3 with Spaniard Xisco Hernandez playing the role of the false 9, while Kean Lewis started on the left in midfield.
Putting behind what looked like an uncomfortable start, Bengaluru switched the momentum in attack when Xisco’s acrobatic volley had to be tipped over by Amrinder Singh on the bounce just past the quarter hour mark. Minutes later, Rahul Bheke saw an equally athletic effort fly wide.
The Blues forced a flurry of corners out of Mumbai, but it was the hosts who capitalised on a Bengaluru corner when Rafael Bastos sparked an attack on the counter before picking Paulo Machado whose finish rolled beyond Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s outstretched leg to make it 1-0 in the 29th minute.A
Bengaluru, playing a high line at the back, looked like conceding a second on the hour mark when Machado slipped the ball through to pick Modou Sougou’s run.A The Senegalese, with only Gurpreet to beat, saw his shot kept out by the Bengaluru ‘keeper.
Needing to chase the game, Cuadrat introduced Chencho Gyeltshen for Xisco twenty minutes into the second half.A The Blues moved the ball around and found themselves in the final third on more than just a few occasions, but seemed bereft of ideas on the finishing front.
Sunil Chhetri had a big chance to get Bengaluru on level terms when a cross from Lewis fell to the captain in the box in the 83rd minute. But an awkward bounce denied the striker control as Mumbai were let off the hook. Bengaluru made two more changes in the form of winger Boithang Haokip who replaced Udanta Singh, and striker Edmund Lalrindika who came on for Harmanjot Khabra, but their frequent forays into the opposition area were held by the Mumbai defence, who protected the lead until the final whistle.
The Blues head back to Bengaluru, where they face NorthEast United in their first home fixture of the second phase of the League on Wednesday.

I-League: East Bengal beat Mohun Bagan 2-0, back in title race

Category : Football , News

Kolkata, Jan 27: East Bengal put themselves back in title contention after defeating arch-rivals Mohun Bagan 2-0 in the second I-League derby at the packed Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Sunday.
Promising striker Jobby Justin starred for the red and gold brigade with a goal (75th minute) and an assist after Spanish forward Jaime Colado (35th) had opened the scoring for the ‘visitors’.
The defeat all but ended Mohun Bagan’s slim title aspirations as they succumbed to their first defeat under new coach Khalid Jamil. In the first leg, East Bengal had edged past Sankarlal Chakraborty’s Mohun Bagan 3-2.
This is the first time East Bengal have beaten Mohun Bagan twice in the same season in the last 15 years.
Courtesy the result, East Bengal (25 points) trimmed the gap to five points on league leaders Chennai City FC (30 points) while Mohun Bagan remained on 21 points from 14 matches.
East Bengal, placed fourth, and Chennai have played 13 matches each so far with the latter taking on third-placed Real Kashmir FC in a crunch tie on Monday.
Despite the presence of skipper Sony Norde in attack, Mohun Bagan looked lacklustre especially at the back from the start.
East Bengal could have taken the lead as early as in the 8th minute but Jobby Justin failed to connect after Laldanmawia Ralte set him up with a low cross inside the box.
Mohun Bagan took time to get going and could have conceded a penalty when goalkeeper Shilton Paul went for a two-footed challenge on Justin. East Bengal players appealed for a penalty but referee CR Srikrisna waved play on.
The ‘hosts’ first real chance came at the half hour mark when Haitian star Sony Norde’s close range effort was blocked by Lalram Chullova.
Five minutes later, East Bengal took the lead as Justin beat Kingsley Eze on the right flank to keep a low ball inside the box for Jaime. The Spaniard dribbled past Gurjinder to slot the ball home.
Mohun Bagan went into the break with a lot to work on as East Bengal were the far better side.
Mohun Bagan started as a rejuvenated unit after the break and East Bengal’s Colado was lucky to be on the pitch after he dragged down Dipanda Dicka on the floor following the striker’s tussle with Johnny Acosta inside the box.
There was more drama later when Norde floated a corner for Eze, who hit the crossbar with the ball then taking a touch off Darren Caldeira, who was in an off-side position.
The Khalid Jamil-coached side vehemently protested the decision as their premature celebrations were cut short.
East Bengal then doubled their tally through brilliant Justin, who nodded in a Lalrindika Ralte corner at the far post to send the crowd into ruptures.

The 65-year-old steered the team to back-to-back qualifications for the World Cup for the first time in Iran’s history.

Atletico Madrid confirm Martins loan to Monaco

Category : Football , News

London, Jan 27: Atletico Madrid on Sunday confirmed they have loaned Portuguese forward Gelson Martins to Ligue 1 strugglers AS Monaco for the rest of the season.
The forward arrived in controversial fashion on a free transfer from Sporting Club de Portugal, over the summer, but has struggled to win a place in the side which is currently second in Spain’s professional football league — La Liga.
Martins has made just eight league appearances, seven of which were as a substitute, and played four more games in other competitions, scoring one goal in the Copa del Rey, reports Xinhua news agency.
The Spanish club confirmed the news on its official website, saying that Martins “faces a new challenge in his professional career and from Atletico Madrid we wish him a lot of luck.”
Atletico are closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea’s former Real Madrid striker, Alvaro Morata on loan with the move expected to be confirmed on Monday or Tuesday.

Patrick Mahomes Silences Doubters With Post-Pro Bowl Message

In one of the least surprising moments from the 2019 NFL Pro Bowl, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named one of the MVPs. After a season in which Mahomes threw for 50 touchdowns and was arguably the best player in the league, adding another accomplishment to the season was almost expected.
Regardless, it was a strong performance and after the game, Mahomes took note of an interesting photo posted by the Chicago Bears Twitter account. It featured the Chiefs signal-caller with Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. The three players were all selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, and Mahomes responded with a few words for those who doubted the strength of their quarterback class.

They said we had a bad Qb draft class! 2 years later… @Mtrubisky10 @deshaunwatson
— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes5) January 27, 2019

It’s hard to argue with Mahomes’ point here, as the three quarterbacks all impressed this season and each of their teams made it to the playoffs. Even beyond that, the Chiefs (12-4), Bears (12-4) and Texans (11-5) all won their divisions as well.

Patrick Mahomes’ Pro Bowl Performance
Although the Pro Bowl isn’t exactly the place to dive too far into stats, Mahomes finished the game by completing 7-of-14 passes for 156 yards (most of the game) along with one touchdown. Watson was a close second in passing, throwing for 128 yards with one score as well, but did throw an interception.
The AFC ran away with this game behind the play of the quarterbacks, winning 26-7 while the only touchdown on the NFC side came when Dak Prescott linked up with Austin Hooper in the fourth quarter. AFC quarterbacks also racked up 362 passing yards compared to just 101 for their opponent.

Patrick Mahomes Wraps 2018 Season With MVP Resume
While the Chiefs quarterback took home the hardware at the Pro Bowl, he deserves to win the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award for the full season also. Mahomes completed 66 percent of his passes for 5,097 yards and the aforementioned 50 touchdowns. Of the 580 passes he threw, only 12 of them were intercepted.
For good measure, Mahomes tacked on 272 rushing yards and two additional scores, but his impressive first season as a starter was impressive beyond just personal numbers. The Chiefs had a great regular season and were an overtime loss away from playing in the Super Bowl. Their season ended in unfortunate fashion in the AFC Championship Game when Tom Brady and the New England Patriots picked up an overtime victory.
In the loss, Mahomes and the Chiefs didn’t even get the opportunity to score thanks to Brady’s impressive drive to end the game. It’s a safe bet that we’ll see plenty more of the 23-year-old quarterback in the playoffs moving forward in his career.

Tom Brady Offered Patrick Mahomes Words of Encouragement After AFC Championship

Tom Brady just quietly approached a security guard waiting outside the Chiefs’ locker room — and asked if he could see Patrick Mahomes. Brady was escorted into a room where he spoke briefly with him. A very clear display of respect from one incredible quarterback to another.
— Jeff Darlington (@JeffDarlington) January 21, 2019

Matthews is not the only one who tried to encourage Mahomes. In the midst of celebrating another Super Bowl appearance, Brady made it a point to find Mahomes after the AFC Championship. During an ESPN interview, Mahomes detailed what Brady said to him after the game (via Kansas City Star).
I think it was a little bit of both. It was such a great game with so many emotions where it was going back and forth at the end. He just came up to me and was kind of giving me, saying, ‘Good game,’ and everything like that.
I mean, he was in my place. He was young. He got to win the Super Bowl in his first year with you (Bruschi) and everybody and so he understands that, I mean, time it flies by and ‘make sure to put in the work. ‘And I think he saw that I’ve put in the work to be in those situations.

Matthews runs a personal training business in the Kansas City area. She admitted that she did not make it to the gym right after the Chiefs loss to the Patriots, but still offered a few workout tips for those that did.

Super Bowl 2019 Is Not on TV Today Sunday, January 27

Category : Football , NFL , Sports , Super Bowl

Fans will have to wait another week for NFL football as the Super Bowl is not until Sunday, February 3rd. The NFL Pro Bowl is on today on ABC and ESPN at 3 p.m. Eastern. The exhibition game is the NFL’s version of an all-star contest. The two rosters feature the top players who are not injured or playing in the Super Bowl. Teams are divided by the NFC and AFC conferences.
Tom Brady rarely plays in Pro Bowls since the Patriots have a long history of competing in the Super Bowl. Former teammate Brandon Spikes noted that Brady does not feel like he is missing out.
“I had one of my best years my third season,” Spikes explained to Sports Illustrated. “I’d been playing off the charts. And I didn’t get picked to go to the Pro Bowl. I was moping around, actually in tears, and a few guys were trying to lift me up, like, ‘It’s gonna be alright man. We’ve got to worry about what’s in front of us.’ Then The Pharaoh himself walks up to me—I used to call Brady The Pharoah and he hated that—Brady walks up to me and says, ‘Hey B, you think I play this s— to go to Pro Bowls? Get it together. Get your head up. We’re trying to win rings. That’s what it is here.’ That’s where I knew what kind of environment I was in, how blessed I was.”

The Patriots Are Slight Favorites Over the Rams
For a few minutes, the Patriots were slight underdogs against the Rams when the Super Bowl line opened. Now, the spread continues to move towards New England as the Patriots are 2.5-point favorites, per OddsShark. Rams head coach Sean McVay discussed what Brady brings to the table for the Patriots.
”I think, you’re just such a fan of the game – that Tom’s [Brady] been doing it for so long, he’s certainly one of those guys when you watch – I think the type of competitor that he was,” McVay said, per Turf Show Times. “I don’t know that I probably had the perspective back then to really think about it from that standpoint. But, what you did respect, was a guy that no moment was too big for him. You talk about the mental toughness that you want to display. Whether, they were behind or whether it was in those crunch-time moments, he seemed to always be at his best.”

Racing club widen lead in Superliga Argentina title race

Buenos Aires, Jan 27: Racing Club extended their lead at the top of the Superliga Argentina football standings with a 3-1 away victory over Aldosivi.
Augusto Solari on Saturday opened the scoring at the Jose Maria Minella Stadium with a fourth-minute strike but Cristian Chavez equalized just before the half-hour mark, reports Xinhua news agency.
The visitors regained the lead when Lisandro Lopez converted from the penalty spot in the 54th minute and Dario Cvitanich put the result beyond doubt with a stoppage time goal.
The result left Racing with 39 points from 16 matches, three points clear of second-placed Defensa a Justicia.
